Riedon's low Ohm resistors

Sudden current or voltage changes are often hazardous to electronic products. For example, transients or surges that reach microprocessor or memory components can destroy those expensive parts, and wipe out critical programming and data. Many electronic products now include surge protection circuits.

In these circuits, low value resistors sense when the current is too high so that measures can be taken upstream before the excess current causes damage. Wirewound resistors are a popular choice for these applications. They are inexpensive, available in low resistance values, have low temperature coefficients and good surge-handling capability. Riedon has served this application for years with their "LO OHM" power resistors

Looking for resistors with Lead (Pb) content to avoid Whisker Growth? Buy Riedon resistors

Military-aerospace subcontractors and suppliers of electronic systems and components continue to have a strong interest in COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) procurement to control costs. However, some designs require that terminations have lead (Pb) content to avoid tin whisker growth.

Most components manufactures, including Riedon, have converted their commercial products to Pb-free terminations as required by environmental regulations. this can make COTS procurements difficult.

However, Riedon can supply resistors product that meet Pb content requirement. Simply request that the terminations be tinned. Please call us for more detailed information.

Resistors in LEDs

When I first attached a 280 ohm resistor in series with a 5mm red LED, the word on the street was that LEDs were low power, forever-lasting devices that would just about completely replace incandescent bulbs for simple binary indicators. LEDs spent a brief period as the numerical display device of choice too, until supplanted by the LCD. Regardless, the bottom line was that LEDs were really easy to work with. Just put that resistor in series - usually, you didn't even need to do the ohms law calculation - rules of thumb were good enough.

Wirewound vs. Film Resistors for Precision Applications

Wirewound resistors have been around for a long time. They enjoy a long life because they have some very important features not duplicated by new technology products. If you must optimize circuit designs where precision is important, you should understand those characteristics.

For most of the history of electronic and electrical circuits, wirewound resistors were the only game in town for precision resistances. Wirewound precision resistors have some important characteristics. First, they can have very tight resistance tolerances . . . 0.005% is commonly achieved. More important, they are stable (15-50ppm/yr) maintaining their precision over time because they are made with stable materials. Their TCR (Temperature Coefficient of Resistance) is low (<10ppm/°C) and can be controlled by selecting special wire alloys. (Usually, you need the lowest TCR, but a higher TCR has special interest in some applications.)
